Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esra Çizmeci's new book is published by Routledge

The book titled "Performing Post-Tariqa Sufism: Making Sacred Space with Mevlevi and Rifai Zikir in Turkey", which Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esra Çizmeci, one of the faculty members of the Department of Theatre, has been working on for a long time, will be published by Routledge, one of the most prestigious publishing houses in the world, on November 10, 2023. The book, which is the product of ethnographic research, approaches the formation of Sufism in the post-sect period from a performative perspective and examines the performative orientation of Sufi rituals in a wide range of public, private, secular, and sacred spaces. Drawing on ethnographic methodology and performance theories, Esra Çizmeci's theoretical framework explores in depth the status of post-sectarian Mevlevi and Rifai practice in contemporary Turkey, the phenomenon of the "authority of the spiritual teacher", the individual and collective performance of Sufi rituals, the education of the soul, and most importantly, the implementation of Sufi teachings in everyday life through the production of sacred spaces. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical sources, such as performance studies, anthropology, religious studies, and cultural studies, and placing contemporary Sufi practices in a historical perspective, this is the first comprehensive publication in the field. We congratulate our esteemed professor for this great achievement and wish her continued success.
